On Wednesday 29th March the MGSC swim team competed in the Southern Metro Regional carnival at MSAC in Albert Park. MGSC had 17 swimmers competing in 17 individual events and 3 4x50m freestyle relays. At the end of the carnival 15 of our 17 swimmers went home with a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place medal.
Gun Year 12 student, Tori E, completed her high school swimming career in style with a Silver medal in the U17 50m butterfly event. Tori has been an outstanding swimmer at MGSC over her 6 years, representing the school at the State carnival multiple times in individual and relay events. Tori trains and competes competitively outside of school, we all wish her the best of luck and encourage her to keep at it - good things will come! Cara J (Year 9) was our only Gold medalist. Cara won the 12-15 years 200m freestyle, the U15 50m butterfly, the U15 50m freestyle and the U15 50m backstroke, she also got pipped on the line in the U12-15 100m freestyle. Cara was also able to get a photo with one of her swimming heroes, Linley Frame, who is an ex-MGSC graduate and Olympic breaststroker. Our U13 and 16 4x50m freestyle relay teams came second with the U14 relay team coming in third place. Congratulations to all swimmers on their efforts in representing MGSC at this years swimming carnivals, good luck to Cara at the State carnival on April 26th, and congratulations to Tori E on a stellar swimming career at MGSC. All the Year 12’s arrived to school on Wednesday 15th February in their crazy costumes for their final time at the 2017 MGSC House Swimming carnival you could feel the excitement in the room. We were all eager to get on the bus and show our House spirit to all the other year levels. When we arrived, we got straight into the House spirit by running in and chanting. The crowd of colours at the Carnegie Swim Centre contained many iconic costumes which demonstrated strong house spirit. From Mackellar there was an eggplant and Ribena, in Kenny we saw the return of the sharks, in Melba there was Little Miss Sunshine and a pineapple, and in Jackson there was a pickle and an appearance by the legendary Steve Irwin. All students had the opportunity to participate in sporting events throughout the day such as 50metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay, 200m freestyle, and the 200m individual medley. Or if they were not interested in competing there were also novelty events to join into such as volleyball, water polo and even staff vs student’s boat race and relay which were great fun to watch. One of the events that I loved was the diving, because it was good to see so many people ‘jump’ out of their comfort zone and try something that may be challenging to them. The other event that I loved was the staff vs student boat race, even if I wasn’t on the boat half the time. It was very entertaining to watch the teachers get involved and show their competitive side, but it was pretty clear that they cheated. All the Houses showed their passion and House spirit during the House Chant and House dance-off by busting some quality moves and dressing up in creative outfits, leaving all the Tear 12’s with such memorable last House Swimming at Mentone Girls’. Importantly, the staff vs student relay race capped off a magnificent day. Mr Day, Mr Russell, Mr Bruhn and Mrs Moline were in one team with Mr Howells, Mr Hull, Miss Holman and Mrs Beggs who made up the second team against student representatives from each House. With a close few legs it was the staff team #1 who took away a nail biting victory from an extremely fast finishing Kenny House. Student participation throughout the entire day was incredible. Each competitor receives a point towards their House for every event they participate in. If you win the final of an event you receive 12 points, 2nd gets 11 points, and all the way down to 8th place who receives 5 points. At the end of the carnival we are able to see which student got the most points for their age group. This year the Age Group Champions were; U13 Olive L (59points); U14 Megan K (57points); U15 Cara J (72points) ; U16 Gabrielle H (79points); U17 Tash B (40points); and Open champion Sam G (62points). Cara J (Year 9) broke 4 MGSC records at this years Swimming Carnival. Cara broke 3 records set by former student Kirsten Roode - the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, and 50m butterfly. Cara also broke 2016 graduate Kiele Dale's 200m Individual medley record by 15seconds - a truly fantastic swim. Cara now hold's 6 MGSC swimming records. Thank you to all the staff who worked tirelessly throughout the day, but most importantly a big thank you to all competitors and houses who did an amazing job and should be extremely proud of their efforts. It was a nail-biting wait to see which house would take home gold. In 4th place was Mackellar (Purple) on 557 points, in 3rd place was Jackson (Green) with a total of 811 points, in 2nd place was Melba (Yellow) on 888 points; and in 1st place was Kenny (Blue) on 930 points who now have won back-to-back titles. Go Jackson. Written by Jackson House Captains – Sarah B and Reina T.
